I always felt that something was missing from the Kolonaki area whenever I tried to satisfy my gastronomic expectations. And this feeling had nothing to do with Michelin stars. It was more about decent, simple, but delicious food with consistent quality. But then Calvi Restaurant made its appearance within the Athens restaurant scene, satisfying those gastronomic expectations of mine with flying colors.
The restaurant is below ground and has many levels to it, with most of the tables cleverly placed around the atrium that is created above the open kitchen. Under the very original crystal lighting, chef Giannis Stanitsas (a recipient of the Golden Hat award) creates Mediterranean dishes with definite Greek origins.
At the moment, the menu is small, simple without pompous wording aiming to impress. What impresses is the pricing policy. Sensible prices in Kolonaki – what a pleasant contradiction. Where else have you found a fresh green salad for 2 euros? Or a burger for 9 euros? Even the more elaborate main dishes, like the superb juicy and delicious aitch bone from kid’s meat cooked in red sauce and pearl barley will not leave you penniless, like other Kolonaki restaurants. The rooster in red sauce with cubed potatoes was also very tasty, while still reasonably priced.
Similarly, the desserts are not to be missed. The apple pie is a definite favorite. Although the kitchen is a little slow, you will find that the service is excellent.
