Meatballs with tomato sauce

This is a very basic Mediterranean meatball recipe that can be served with rice or fried potatoes, for a hearty home-cooked family dinner. Children will love it!

  • 1/2 kg minced meat
  • 2-3 tbsp oil
  • salt & pepper

Ingredients for the sauce

  • 1/2 kg onions, chopped in brunoise
  • 1/2 kg tomatoes or one tbsp tomato puree
  • 1 cup oil
  • 2-3 cloves crushed garlic
  • 2-3 bay leaves
  • salt & pepper


Knead the minced meat with salt and pepper, and shape it into meatballs of the size you like (the smaller the more delicate).

Sauté the onions in the oil, and then add the tomatoes, garlic, bay leaves, salt and pepper.

While the sauce cooks, heat a little oil in a big pan and brown the meatballs.

Adding them to the sauce once browned.

Let them boil in the sauce to cook.


If you want a smooth sauce, take the meatballs out when cooked and blend in a food processor, then for an even finer result, pass through a sieve.
