1. Look to pack clothes that won’t need ironing, especially if your trip includes a few destinations. You won’t want to worry about neatly folding and refolding. Your suitcase will assuredly contain a balled-up crumples of clothing halfway through your trip.

2. Pack alternatives in tops. Try a 5-to-2 ratio of tops to pants. Sometimes 5-to-1 will do it.

3. When in doubt, leave it out. If you’re not sure you can see yourself wearing it, don’t bother bringing it. Don’t bring anything uncomfortable.

4. Create combinations in your mind, putting together pieces of clothing that match in terms of color and style. If you pack something that can’t be paired, you obviously will not wear it.

5. Choose “uniforms.” What activities will you be doing on your trip? Working out? Pack two work-out uniforms. Touring a city? Think of comfortable outfits for walking. Think practically. If you don’t pack for the specific activities you intend to do, you will be buying new clothing.

6. Avoid sensitive textiles like satin, because they’ll reach their destination in a very bad state. Silk and jersey are always safer fabric options.

7. Pack layers. For example, bring a few tank tops with a sweater, rather than an assortment of tank tops, t-shirts, and long-sleeved shirts.

8. Remember that shoes are heavy. As a general rule, never pack more than three. Bring one for each anticipated activity. For example, bring one pair of flip flops, one pair of heels, and one pair of sneakers- nothing more.
