In the morning you’ll be woken by the birdsong, in the evening you will light candles and oil lamps, and if you come in winter and it is chilly, rather than turning up the heating, you will warm yourself by the fire.

Where you’ll sleep
There are ten cottages, all clustered together. Some are just for two; others are a little larger and can accommodate up to three, four or five people. Each cottage has its own shower (most cottages have the bathroom inside, but in a few it is located right outside), as well as a fireplace and a simply equipped kitchenette. There is no electricity (except for that bathroom light and the refrigerator), but you get candles and oil-lamps. It is not a bad idea to bring your own flashlight. Keep in mind that you can't charge your mobile phones in the houses (good excuse to switch them off!), though Myrto will be happy to do it for you in the village.

When you feel hungry
Stock up on groceries and you can do your own cooking, either in your kitchenette, or in the shared, wood-burning oven outside. You can of course also eat out in the village, where you can choose between simple tavernas or places that cater to less Greek-oriented taste buds.

Bring the children!
This is a great place to go to with children who love the outdoors, especially if they like to go for walks and play in nature. The nearby beaches are very child-friendly. Teenagers will probably appreciate the lively atmosphere at the coast, but may get a little bored staying in a place like Aspros Potamos.

Το see and do
This spot is for anyone looking for peace and quiet, and for hikers and nature lovers in particular, but it is also ideal for beach bums! You can use your cottage as a base and spend your days on the beach or going around, but it may be even better to get here with a pile of books (and a good companion), and just unwind.

Good to know
Aspros Potamos is open all year. The price for two people starts at €35 per night. Credit cards are not accepted.

Getting there
The drive from the airport (or port) of Iraklion is quite enjoyable and takes about two hours. First you follow the signs for Agios Nikolaos and Sitia and about 20 km after Agios Nikolaos you turn towards Ierapetra. From Ierapetra you take the coastal road towards Sitia. After you pass through Makrigialos (about 20 km from Ierapetra) and enter Analipsi. You should look for a small sign on your left for Pefki village. Follow this road and after one km you’ll find two small signs. Turn left at the sign for Aspros Potamos and you will find the settlement after 500 m. There is a parking lot.
